Ruled by King Taufa'ahau IV, this ancient Polynesian kingdom is one of the world's few remaining constitutional monarchies. Captain Cook named Tonga the friendly islands and this title remains fitting today. Tonga is renowned for its friendliness and gentle pace of life.
Tonga is an archipelago covering 7700 sq km (3000 sq miles), yet the 170+ islands occupy a combined landmass of just 748 sq km (289 sq miles). Only 37 of these islands are inhabited. Tonga's high volcanic and low coral forms give the islands a unique character.
The main island of Tongatapu, in the south, is home to the capital of Nuku'alofa and the Royal Palace. Around two thirds of the country's population of 98,000 live in Nuku'alofa. Sightseeing on Tongatapu should include the Royal Palace, Mala'ekula (Royal Tombs) and the 5-meter high Ha'amonga Trilathon, built nearly a thousand years ago.
In the central area is the Ha'apai group which consists of a chain of coral atolls surrounded by turquoise waters and ideal for serious relaxation. It is also a superb place to view humpback whales as they migrate through Tonga from June through October.
Ever popular with yachties and kayakers, the Vava'u group in the north offers sheltered harbors, lagoons with crystal clear water, stunning white sandy beaches, jungle covered islands and limestone caves.
Tonga is perfect for whale watching, kayaking, sailing, discovering a culture rich in tradition, or simply getting away from it all
