The Fiji Islands

Palm trees and quiet beaches await those seeking rest and tranquility, while thrill seekers can rush down raging white water rivers through steep gorges. Fiji is world-renowned amongst divers for diverse marine life and thriving, colorful reefs. Arts lovers will appreciate Fiji's fine tradition of tapa cloth-making, weaving, pottery and wood carving.

Lying in the southwest Pacific, Fiji is 3,000 km (1,850 miles) northeast of Sydney, 2,000 km (1,200 miles) north of Auckland and 5,000 km (3,000 miles ) southwest of Hawaii. Fiji's nearest island neighbors are the Melanesian islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and the Polynesian islands of Tonga and Samoa. As natural crossroads, Fiji's 320+ islands have long been linked with and influenced by these other nations through migration and trading of goods and skills.

In addition to Fijians and Pacific Islanders, others groups who have settled here include Indians, Chinese and Europeans. Each of these ethnicities contribute to Fiji's unique and fascinating culture.
